my mom's spice tea recipe
My mom’s spice tea is one of my favorite tastes of fall and winter. I started my day by making a big pot of it - even though I’m the only one in my house who likes it. It’s Comfort Food for me - in liquid form. My mom made it rarely when I was growing up. I remember spice tea on Christmas morning, snow days and when she’d host her evening card group a few times a year....

a taste of home
upon waking
I know what I am about to do
the anticipation makes my mouth water
no coffee today
no herbal tea
made one mug at a time
today is a spice tea day
my mom’s recipe
a taste of home
the one I grew up in
the little house
at the end of the dead end street
the one with the kitchen so small
it was like an afterthought
oh, but the meals my mother made there
I smile at the...

The Words We Never Finish

These crumpled pages prohibit empty words with significant cause A simple feeling, not worthy enough for the world to see An incomplete story …worth finishing The short poems and raw prose that we long ago abolished when we barely started … all sit under beds couches ...

under the surface
I hold back
instead of saying
what I think
I bite my tongue
I chafe at the bit
I gnash my teeth
I choke back the words
it is better this way
keeps the peace
on the outside
I’ve done it since forever
it is a habit now
smile and nod
be polite
maybe not always
but usually
for it is expected of me
I don’t want to disappoint
or raise eyebrows
heaven forbid
what if…...

Paper Lanterns
Fragile as paper lanterns,
our delicate fibers tear.
Allowing the inevitable winds of change
to rupture the fabric into fissures of despair.
Tossing and twirling,
we vehemently fight against our fate.
Not wanting to relinquish control
to a life we have learned to negate.
Yet in the opening of that chasm,
our hidden light shall shimmer bright.
Exposing to the world that inner beauty,

Tell me again that I am beautiful
bluesandbarebones:
Tell me again that I am beautiful The scrutiny in my head is too loud I need you to shout above the critics And gently remind me that the mirror Is a lie I will believe you Because the look in your eyes Tells me it’s the truth And it’s easier to accept Delusion When it’s coming From someone that you love
pallid-fire-deactivated20120104 asked: Thank you so much for you kind comment. You're such a positive inspiration. So glad to at least be following you. I hope you are very well. <3
the-fearbox asked: Thanks for following! I'm really happy to have your support with the project. Just wanted to let you know you're free to submit your own fears if you'd like to. Hope you enjoy :)

the only direction you’re ever really traveling is home
whether you set out on that journey knowingly or not

Happiness is...
Happiness is sitting side by side on the love seat with my youngest son, both still in our pajamas, as he reads Calvin and Hobbes comics to me aloud. A ready laugh is rimming the edges of his voice, and we’re sitting close enough that as he reads I can lay my cheek on his hair and still see the pictures, or plant a kiss atop his sweet head. It was but a brief moment. He’s up and at...
Ever Changing Snowflake
foreverinouterspace:
To everyone,
she had but one face.
To herself,
she had millions.
Always changing faces,
always changing masks,
everybody knew her differently,
no one knew her wholly.
I think I know this girl. Do you?
Taking Stock...The Things That Matter Most: why... →
takingstockofwhatmattersmost:
why are we all writing about writing
when reading is the key
to be a better writer
it’s not what you write but what you see
i’m no expert to be sure
but how you read makes a difference
how the words sound
how they keep cadence and rhythm
don’t just read the next time you pick up Poe
learn
Good advice. Does reading my Tumblr dashboard count? Hope so!...

While in the presence of overwhelming love sadly so many succumb to their fears
Though bathed in the Abundant Grace of God far too often we drown in a river of tears
Ever too fearful to sing our own song deeply regretting the words never spoken

A Clarity of Conscious: My Armor →
aclarityofconscious:
My armor
For most of recent life I’ve worn armor, To protect from bullets and blast, While in the service and with the force, Until the danger passed.
The armor then would be removed, Until the next shift or fray, Hung in a locker or stowed with my gear, Ready no matter the day.
But…

double damn
damn
double damn
this is not how I wanted today to start
with a headache threatening at my temples upon waking
and you throwing my words from yesterday back at me
yes I do need quiet time
so I can handle the noise and commotion
but I need you too
I thought the walls came down
in the storm of emotion
a few weeks ago
but they are going back up
because the wounds are deep
on both sides

Evanescence
aclarityofconscious:
Evanescence is a gradual thing, Nearly imperceptible to the human eye.
Small pieces simply blend into the background clutter, Blurring what were distinct lines.
Subtly the erosion continues, Widening the gulf between the present and the absent.
A larger world, hardly noticing or caring Of what is being lost, continues on without skipping a beat.
And eventually the...

“I love you, but…”
Four simple words,
You whispered before dawn.
And then you rose, Got out of bed,
And just like that were gone. I woke to feel you leaving,
And asked you please to stay,
In my arms a short while,
But today was not the day. Your mind was far too busy,
The bed held no…

Year Cheer
splintersandmilkshakes:
The Christmas season is upon us
anticipation builds all year.
It is the eve of that fateful day
loved ones congregate to feast and cheer.
After all the commotion is done,
we go about our habitual business.
We have nothing to fill the emptiness
as we leave behind this spirit of Christmas.
Perhaps we should ponder the significance
and allow these charitable...

wanting and needing and living
living
forever each others love, life
forever is just the start…

thread of revelation: Wrapping →
bluesandbarebones:
I wrapped up all your presents I hope you like the bows I got the ball you wanted And the rocket ship that glows
But as I finished wrapping It then occurred to me How nothing that meant anything Was underneath that tree
The toys will soon be broken Books read and out of sight We’ll take down all…
Oh, bluesandbarebones, this is beautiful! I need to be sure to wrap...

I love a boy who doesn’t read poetry Doesn’t write letters And, doesn’t understand when I thank trees. He thinks slow dancing is a waste of time Peek-a-boos spoil a child’s mind And happy thoughts can never get us to fly I stare at him while he’s asleep He keeps the lights open in order…

Amazing Grace
My oldest son is practicing Amazing Grace on his violin.
The music floats to me, standing in the kitchen, from the living room.
He’s playing it on a repeating loop this morning at home, before he plays it in a few hours time at his great grandma’s funeral.
My father brought the music over on Sunday afternoon and they worked on it together.
I get a lump in my throat every time I...

a good friend
A good friend can see through your makeup and pasted on smile and say with love and compassion, “You look tired.” Then she hugs you, because she knows it’ll help soothe your weary spirit, even if only for that fleeting moment. I am thankful for my friends. Now, more than ever.
Reflections from the hallway at school yesterday, as my friend and I rounded up our children, and...
