life mates
I was walking Blue on toward home, when I spied a cardinal pair swoop and fly together, side by side, as the cold wind blew. That’s love.

a.k.a. Valentine’s Day
Happily married, mother of two ornery boys, one striped cat and a puppy. They inspire the stories I tell and art I make.

a.k.a. Valentine’s Day
The melancholy river bears us on. When the moon comes through the trailing willow boughs, I see your face, I hear your voice and the bird singing as we pass the osier bed. What are you whispering? Sorrow, sorrow. Joy, joy. Woven together, like reeds in moonlight.
— Virginia Woolf, A Haunted House, And Other Short Stories (via violentwavesofemotion)
Sighing melancholy sighs at reading this brief quote with many of my favorite things: a river, a weeping willow, joy and moonlight. Oh, sorrow. Yes. Woven amidst the rest, I know you too, but joy ultimately wins. ~Janean

looking back
because that’s what we do
there are times
we could have zagged
instead of zigged
visa versa too
we can’t go back
there are no do overs
I’m just glad
I’ve spent these years
with you
looking forward
we have more questions
than answers
and when we get them
we may wish
we didn’t know
so let’s zig more
and zag less
and remember
to laugh and love and live
for as long as we have left
together
could be you’re stuck with me
for many years yet
so I can baffle and perplex you
with more poems
about zigging and zagging

I peeked inside my wedding ring to see the engraving, “JMT - MTB 5-31-97”.
Yep. It’s today! Happy 15th Anniversary to my wonderful husband!
I love you and look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries together.

today is the day
that chemo starts again
not for me
for him
I am writing about burnt toast
and brightly colored socks
because it’s easier
to be chatty
about breakfast
and strands of cotton
than the unknown force
that six months of chemo
will be in my husband’s body
we all feel the apprehension
inside this house
we go together
at 12:30 p.m.
today is the day
Ugh.

I slept four hours
hard
thanks to Sandman
and the cat
they both cuddled me
fast asleep
sometime before ten
now it’s the wee hours
of the night
full dark outside
I can hear the clock tick
and the chimes chime
my child’s cough
from up the stairs
I’ll tuck back in
before the sun rises
or midday
for a nap
home feels good
after four nights
in the hospital
we’re together
again
sleepin’ under
the same roof
as it should be
